Children’s eye care, from day one
Looking after your child’s eye health from an early age is crucial for their development. Children are eligible for free NHS-funded eye examinations each year until they turn 16.
Why are eye exams important for children?
It is essential to observe children’s eye health as they grow because any problems that are left uncorrected can lead to more serious issues later in life. It can also impair their quality of learning at school by limiting how much of the whiteboard they can see and how much of their textbooks they can read.
During our eye exams we also check for colour vision deficiency, commonly known as colour blindness. Diagnosing it early allows us to discuss the impacts this may have, especially when it comes to career choices and how it may affect your child’s learning.

Who is it for?
- Children who frequently rub their eyes or blink a lot
- Children whose eyes appear red or sore
- Children who squint whilst watching TV or hold books too close
- Children who avoid reading or complain of fatigue or discomfort
- Every child, approximately every 12 months throughout school life
What to expect
- 01
Infants
If you have any concerns, infants can be tested, so an optometrist can check that your child is hitting their developmental milestones.
- 02
Preschool (3-5 years)
We recommend that most children visit an optometrist at preschool age, before they start to read and write.
- 03
School-age (6-17 years)
At this age children should have eye examinations annually, so issues with their eyesight don’t hold them back.
- 04
Frames that fit
Robust frames made to survive the rough and tumble of everyday life, including Tomato Glasses for babies and growing faces and Erin’s World Frames for children with Down Syndrome.
